What itemnumbers is

itemnumbers helps Australian clinicians and authorised practice staff find Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items and check them against the wording of the schedule. It is a reference and checking tool for qualified health professionals.

General information, not billing advice

Everything itemnumbers shows is general information. It is not billing, legal or clinical advice. Verify every item against the MBS and your own clinical judgement before you bill. The practitioner who renders a service remains responsible for the items claimed for it.

Items suggested from a description, dictation or uploaded note are produced with the help of an AI model and can be wrong or incomplete. Automatic checks are read from item descriptors only; rules that appear in explanatory notes, legislation or Services Australia guidance may not be reflected.

Source of schedule data

Item numbers, descriptors, fees and benefits are taken from the official MBS Online publications at mbsonline.gov.au. Each item page shows the release it comes from. The official schedule prevails if there is any difference.
